Has it seriously been almost 2 years since my last post?! So sorry about that. Here is a quick recap of the past 2 years: friends had babies, I got married, we got to release baby sea turtles, found a new dog, Snowmageddon 2014 (Suz's 30th), sister moved to the beach and celebrated a year of marriage. Holy guacamole....what a busy time.

I'm hoping to shake off the dust and start updating this a little better. So many ideas run through my head and at times I may sound jumbled (hey, give me a break.....I'm not a writer). I will try my best to make things clear. I plan on writing about my life, maybe add some recipes and show off some up-cycling (hopefully). Thanks for checking back in on me and making sure I am still here!!
My dad died. He was my best friend, my first love, my everything. I was a daddy's girl. It seemed like no one really understood me, except for him. I would share everything with him and he would give me advice or just be that person I could lean on and no matter what, he would tell me everything would be OK. He was my biggest fan!

The weekend before Thanksgiving, November 17th to be exact, we were having Family Dinner Night at my parent's house like we normally do every Saturday night. My sister and her family was there, my fiance was there, Grandma was not there only because she wasn't feeling well. We had chili that night. It was a great night. We were all laughing and talking. Gene, my brother-in-law, bought a new gun at the Gun Show and was showing my dad. Dad, being a retired police officer and a Navy Veteran, loved looking at guns and enjoyed when Gene would show him the new ones. Dad was so happy that night. We all finished up dinner and put away they dishes. There were still some dishes in the sink, but they would just be cleaned later. Dad always hated a dirty dish in the sink so he started to wash them. He stopped washing them for a minute, we figured he got hot and went outside to cool off. He came back in and was having difficulty breathing. We rushed in and as soon as my mom, sister and my fiance could get to my dad, he collapsed. I got on the phone with 9-1-1 and my sister started chest compressions; my dad was having a heart attack. My brother-in-law snatched up my nephew and took him outside so he wouldn't see my dad. The rescue squad showed up and started working on my dad. They were able to get him stable and transported to the hospital. This was probably the longest 20 minutes of my life.

We all arrived to the hospital and were taken to a room to wait. The nurse would come in and let us know what was going on. My mom was taken back and was with him. Once they got him checked out and test run, we were all able to go back and sit with him. He was unconscious but stable. He was then flown to another hospital that would be able to care for him and treat him more advance than they could. So we then drove to Raleigh. We went to the Critical Care Waiting Room and waited for just a few minutes. We were taken back to the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and then sent to a conference room. None of us knew what to expect. By this time we have already all cried our eyes out. It had been a bad roller coaster ride and it was like we couldn't get off. A doctor came in and told us not to get our hopes up. Since dad was unconscious for so long, there could be brain damage, he could be in a vegetative state; things didn't look good. They were getting him settled in his room so we had to wait. They had started him on this Hypothermia Therapy where they cool your body temperature down to about 33 degrees Celsius. They do this to patients who have had a heart attack and gone unconscious to help save brain cells. We were finally able to go into his room to see him. The Dr walked us in and told us not to get our hopes up. Mom had to start answering some medical history on dad. They were behind him, and the nurse started asking questions. All the questions were yes/no. Mom would reply to the question. My sister, BIL (brother-in-law), my fiance and myself were standing over my dad just watching him when we saw his head move. We all looked at each other and thought it might have been a type of reflex to the medicine. Then the nurse would ask my mom another question and she would respond, and then my dad would respond...with the correct answer by shaking or nodding his head! We all got excited and told the doctor. So the doctor came in and asked my dad simple questions and my dad would respond. The doctor said that was highly unusual but it was a very good sign that he would have little, to no, brain damage. We had hope!

For the next few days were (my mom, my sister and myself) stayed at the hospital keeping watch over dad. We were all he had and we wanted to be there for him, whenever he woke up. I'm not going to go into the days/weeks spent in the hospital. I will just say that we had good days and we had bad days. Some of the good days consisted of dad sitting up and watching TV with us and whispering that he loved us and him making jokes or gestures. He was a very strong man and it was hard to watch such a strong man become so weak.

December 12 was the beginning of the end. He was to start on dialysis to help flush the toxins out of his body. We were all there (we never missed a day going to visit). We went in and told him we loved him and we would see him soon. He would give a wink or a smile to acknowledge. We waited and waited and waited. Finally, we went back into his room close to midnight and stood watch over him all night. We all got a couple hours of sleep, but were with him the whole time. Finally, at 8am on December 13, his cardio doctor came in and let us know the outcome. It wasn't good. At this point the only thing keeping my dad alive was the blood pressure medicine. The strong man who raised me, was still trying to fight, but grew so tired and he couldn't fight anymore. The decision was made (by all of us) to give him comfort care. It was 8:30am when the comfort care was given, all of his medicines were turned off. At 8:45am, we watched him take his last breath, and then he was gone. He gave a good fight, but in the end, it was just too much for him. My dad was 67.

It has been the toughest Holiday season without my dad. He was such a big staple in our lives. I know we all miss him, but I feel I miss him more. He was that one person who understood everything about me. I have nothing but good memories with him. One of my favorites are all the times we watched the Duke basketball games on TV (I was with him when he watched his last one). I love my dad and I will miss him every day of my life, but I do believe I will see him again. In my faith, we believe in eternal life. And it was said best at his funeral, as long as you talk about him and remember him, he lives on forever. I love you Big D! <3 little A!!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I still can't believe I haven't posted anything in a while. With work and the construction going on, I end up going to bed only to wake up feeling like I haven't slept. But don't worry...there is a light at the end of this tunnel. I am about a week away from closing on my very 1st (and more than likely ONLY) home! It has been over a year process. This marathon has now turned into a sprint.

The house looks amazing with all sorts of fun touches my contractor did for me. My future brother in law built me this AMAZING "butcher block" style island counter top, I have a screen door for my laundry room, and in about a week I can call it all....MINE (well...until April 27, then what is mine will turn into ours). But I am so excited!

Here is a little sneak peak of what I have:

I've been given the go ahead. I have the plans, the builder and almost all of the permits....wait, ALMOST all of the permits??

I'm waiting on one permit to build. I found out that the reason we haven't broken ground was because the house plans I have do not meet NC Building Codes. Are you freaking kidding me!!! So I have had to get permission from the designer of the plans to make the slight (and I mean SLIGHT) modifications to the house.

After waiting what seemed forever, I finally got the permission needed, and I forward it to my builder. And I am still waiting. I kind of feel like I should have just bought a house and dealt with that rather than building one. Everyone said it would be fun...it hasn't been fun at all. It gets to the point I start to get excited and then squashed.

Excited moment #1 - went to Lowe's for a sidewalk sale. It was amazing. So many faucets and shower things. Bought about $400 worth of faucets and what not for the house (bought all I needed). I went home and checked the retail on all the items I got and it came out to a total of $1200....holy crap what a steal! Low moment....I picked up two faucets that I LOVED and went to buy them, they rang up as under investigation and I couldn't buy them. Come to find out, the items they were selling came from a recovery warehouse...basically the two faucets I was in love with, someone stole them and tried to return them for a profit. Awesome.

I'm just ready to have this over with and have a freaking house. I have been waiting with this process for over a year now. Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05827674630819437434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1326287715575321301.post-19671563759010402452012-04-02T15:56:00.000-04:002012-04-02T15:56:05.115-04:00Yummy Dumplings

I make it a point to have dinner with my friends AT LEAST once a month (more times are welcomed also). For our usually dining spots we choose Buffalo Wild Wings. It is usually something everyone can agree on and it is easy enough to meet up at. Well, my friend Suzie and I tried a new experience a few weeks ago. And it was amazing!

We went to David's Dumpling and Noodle Bar by NC State's campus (corner of Oberlin and Hillsborough St). He has been open for a while, but we just found him recently. We took a look at the menu online and decided that is a place where we could seriously grub on! So we met up after work and had dinner. It is a quaint restaurant, but the food is amazing! We decided to eat just dumplings and I am so glad we did!

Of course, he does have all sorts of noodle dishes, Chinese dishes, Thai dishes. Tons of stuff. We ordered the Spicy fried Won tons....

Yes, they are as good as they look!! We also ordered Pork and Shrimp Open Top Dumplings...

And these were just as good as the others!

If you are near State's campus...right by the Bell Tower....stop by and eat at David's because the place is AMAZING! I hope to go back real soon!

P.S. we also had Popsicles from LocoPops right next door. Mine was Mexican Chocolate and Suzie got Raspberry Mojito!

Got an email today that the appraisal was accepted (appraised for a GREAT amount) and a request for funding is going in tomorrow. Starting to get a little excited...won't be too excited until we break ground! Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05827674630819437434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1326287715575321301.post-66268769333877906222012-03-24T10:25:00.000-04:002012-03-24T10:25:34.123-04:00Hunger Games

I'm not a big reader at all. It use to be the one thing I hated in school. I never read the assignments, just skimmed. As I got older and got to pick the books I wanted to read, it became a little more enjoyable. With this being said, I started reading The Hunger Games trilogy. I didn't find these books until the released the trailer for the movie. I knew that before I saw the movie, I wanted to read the book to know what the heck it was about.

I finished the first book in a few days (between work and overtime and all these other factors) but I couldn't put it down. I was such a great read. Everything about it was nothing I had read before. I ended up buying the second book and read that in two days. I couldn't put that one down either! I told myself I was going to wait a while before buying the third. I didn't have to wait too long, I just borrowed the third from my Aunt. The whole series was great! The third book gives you closure. But all in all, it was a great series! Now, on to my Friday night...

I have never gone to the movies on an opening night. I don't like big crowds. Sometimes I would wait until the movie came to DVD and rent it. It's cheaper to rent it then to spend $20 on 2 tickets. After playing wiffle ball at my pal Suzie's house this past Sunday, we decided to do a double date to the movies. She would bring her husband and I would bring E. They seemed on board even though they had no idea what the movie was even about. So we bought our tickets online (thankful that we did that because a lot of the showings had sold out) and waited until Friday. We met up at Dickie's BBQ (I had some amazing Spicy Cheddar Sausage...holy moly) and of course went to Target to stock up on some movie treats.

We ended up going to the 10:35pm showing of the movie since we figured there would be less teenagers there. Well, we were wrong. They had us lined outside the numbered theater waiting to get in and all you saw were these preteen girls with their hair braided and face painted with the guys they liked from the movie. All I could hope for was now squealing once we got in there. On a side note...reading the book makes me wonder if these kids actually understood the whole meaning of the book.

I'm not going to give anything away...no spoiler here...but the movie was great. I was wondering how they were going to show some of the gore...but it was well played. I enjoyed the book way more, but usually the books are always better than the movies. So now I can say that I have been to a sold out movie on opening night. :) Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05827674630819437434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1326287715575321301.post-61965030826131256262012-03-11T20:01:00.000-04:002012-03-11T20:01:56.658-04:00Hiccups

I haven't posted in a while and I am so sorry. It has been busy with work (working overtime) and busy with house approval stuff.

So in my previous post, I told you guys that I was approved to buy a house. Well, in small print, I was also approved to build, if I wanted to. I wanted to. I wasn't able to find THE house, so I was approached to build. I have been busting butt to get all of the things in line to meet the deadline to get a contract in.

I met the contract deadline and I am now waiting for final approval on if I can build or not. Always a waiting game. So here is a little preview of where I might be :) More to come once I know what in the world is going on!Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05827674630819437434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1326287715575321301.post-43825030077192643292012-01-27T12:40:00.000-05:002012-01-27T12:40:21.700-05:00Approved!<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I am so excited!! No matter what, there is that one person you can always call and talk to. I'm lucky, I have two. Let me introduce you to my two best friends:

Nick

We all had art history together. I became friends with Suzie first. We were introduced by a mutual classmate (i had another class with that person). The three of us would hang out and talk before and after class. This mutual classmate had a big crush on this surfer type youngin in art history and we were all introduced to Nick. The first time we all hung out was at Cracker Barrell when were suppose to be in class (that will be an ongoing theme for all of us the next couple of years). We all got along great and it was fun being around them.

We took day trips places and spent weekends at the beach and Spring Breaks. We would always cook out and hang out and nothing was ever dull (by the way, we ditched that mutual classmate...not enough time for that story). We were starting to round out the end of our days at JCC...Suzie left first to go to NCSU, then I left to work full time and then Nick left to go to ECU. No matter how far we went or who was where, we always made time to get some dinner and catch up.

These 2 folks are the greatest friends ever.
Suzie got married a few years ago to Dave. Dave puts up with us. She works at NCSU and has 3 petchildren...Harvey the dog, Winston the cat and Barney the frog. We share common interest in TV shows and Ikea! I know that if I ever need to talk to her, I can text or call, no matter how later it is.

Nick just got married to his girlfriend Rachel and has enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and he leaves on February 14 of this year. I'm going to miss him a lot. He is like a little brother to me. I've seen him go through break ups and new girl friends; funny times and pissed off times. We are going to have a cook out for him as a going away type deal...one last cook out!!

Now you have met my best friends :)
Wow...I can't believe it! I spent my New Years Eve eating Chinese (like I always do) and watched the ball drop with the dogs. I was house sitting, so no big plans. Everyone makes resolutions for the new year, and of course I do also. My big resolution....be a better me. I'm trying to change the things I'm not crazy about. No, not so much loose all this weight, but be a healthier me.

I realized after watching a gazillion episodes of Say Yes to the Dress that I will be doing that soon; dress shopping. I saw one episode were this woman went to try on dresses and she couldn't get one on to show, and she wasn't a large woman at all. And then I looked at myself before taking a shower one night and thought, oh gosh...what if that happens to me. I know exactly what would happen. I would shut down, cry and just want to get out of the dress store as fast as I could. I don't want that. I want to be happy and healthy and enjoy this adventure, not be fearful of it.

I've started keeping a food journal and write down everything I eat. Wow! I've also started keeping a work out calendar. I need to be active for at least 30 minutes every night. I took a walk today with E and Bear. It was great. It was a crisp afternoon and we walked at a brisk pace. It was great and I hope to keep this up!Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05827674630819437434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1326287715575321301.post-50018590227658265002011-12-22T11:15:00.000-05:002011-12-22T11:15:42.727-05:00Little People in Fur Coats<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">"We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals." Immanuel Kant

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">My parents house is notorious for abandoned animals. When I was growing up, it was nothing for a stray animal to wonder up. Some we kept (mostly the cats) and others we found homes for or called the local animal shelter. We have had so many, I can't even count them all on 2 hands.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Our most recent resident we named Jasper. Jasper was a scraggly old guy who was so loud. Every time he meowed, you could hear him from yards away. And bless his little heart, every time he opened his mouth you could see all 3 teeth. He stuck around for a couple of months and after a while we noticed a gash on the top of his head. We tried to squirt neosporin in it several times, but he started to catch on to us. We talked about catching him and taking him to the vet; he went with no resistance (he was so friendly). Well, our beloved friend and vet, Dr. Paul, did some blood work and it came back that Jasper had feline Leukemia and Feline AIDS; he had to be put down. My dad and I share the same soft spot for animals, and yes it is sad for both of us, we are just happy he is in a better place.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">We have a couple more strays that we have somewhat adopted as our own. Scout has been around for 3 years now. She is the most loving cat I have ever met. I'll take the food out to feed her and she just wants to be loved on. I would take her back to Raleigh if I could, but she is an outdoorsy kind of girl. When she came up, we didn't know if she was a boy or a girl. She was fat and sassy. She has all this hair that makes her seem bigger than she is. I have a big connection with her. She is a sweet cat.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> Another cat we have is Angel. Angel was rescued from the yard. She was caught when she was a kitten and taken to the vet. Dr. Paul told us the she had been living off of earthworms to survive. Bless her little heart. When she was little, she was pure white. The older she got, the more of a calico blanket she seemed to have on her back. She has the bluest eyes that would be so pretty...if they weren't crossed. Yea, she may not be as friendly as the others, but she is happy and in a home not eating earthworms.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Next, we have Bear. OK, so Bear wasn't a stray, but he was abandoned in a box with 4 more of his brothers and sister (happy to report they all have great homes). E wanted to keep Bear. I think he wanted to keep Bear because of how much I was attached to him. Bear is a sweet dog and I can't believe someone would just dump animals in someone else's driveway. I told someone this and they said, "well maybe the person who dropped them there knew that the puppies had a better chance." Never thought of it that way. I think Bear is a great edition to the family!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Since the holidays are right around the corner, don't forget about the furry family members. This is the most depressing time for them. Give them some extra love, just because.
Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05827674630819437434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1326287715575321301.post-37140547949663925632011-12-16T10:17:00.000-05:002011-12-16T10:17:38.456-05:00Holiday Season<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">It's the holiday season and there has been so much going on. I had cookie making at mom and dad's and a birthday to get ready for (not mine..E's) and tracked out to go see lights. It's been busy and I have a feeling it will stay busy until the New Year!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Let's start with E's birthday. Birthday's have always been a big deal with my family growing up. For my sister it was more of a birthday month. We always celebrated as long as we could. It was a race to see who could wish who a Happy Birthday first (I usually won). But with E's family, I've noticed it is a little lackluster. Don't get me wrong, I love E's family...couldn't have asked for a better group of people. They aren't as festive when birthday's come into play. E was a little down that day. I tried everything I could to cheer him up, he would just react as "just another birthday."
I knew it would be a day like that, so I bought him the best present EVER!! And I mean EVER!!!!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">So the first picture is him opening his present (he wanted to open it early so it wasn't framed or anything). His reaction the whole time was "No you didn't! No you didn't!" Oh yes I did!! The second picture is his gift, an 11x14 picture of Josh Hamilton from the Texas Rangers (and a hometown boy). E loves Hamilton. We watched every Rangers game and even watched the World Series in Mexico. Dedication right there. It is now framed and hanging where E can see him everyday (I've already caught him twice staring at it).

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Next on the list of busy times, we went to go see the Meadow Lights. Meadow Lights is this little farm area that has Christmas lights. You can ride a train to see the lights, ride a carousel and visit the store (that has old time candy by the pound, yea, we stocked up). The lights were great and it just got me in the season. Before we went, I got my Palm Christmas Tree out and decorated it and made the apartment fill Christmasy.

It's been a little busy. But thank's for the patience!

I mentioned "Cletus" in an earlier post (Knee Deep). Cletus and I have a love/hate relationship...I love to hate him! Cleatus is a big part of my life. Cletus shows up at times where he is not wanted. The first time I remember Cletus making a huge apperance was at my sister's wedding. He was obnoxious. He overstayed his welcome, if he even had one. He made my life miserable. By the way, Cletus is my fever blister. Strange, yes, I am.

As you can see, here he is, starting off. He always does this. He will start off just being this annoying bump on my lip. Usually, he hangs out on the lower lip, he isn't a big fan of the upper lip. Cletus has been in my life for as long as I can remember. My dad use to tease me all the time. He told me it was a kissing disease and that I was kissing too many boys (of course that embarrased me and I vowed never to show my face when Cletus came to visit). He was horrible, Cletus..not my dad. He started off as a bump, and then he got bigger and bigger, taking over half of my lip...I swear I could look down and see my lip BULGING!

After hanging out for a couple of days, he would start to turn into this scabby mess. As you can see in a recent picture, he is just hanging out. I know what Cletus is and what brings him on, sometimes. Sometimes it is out of the blue...like in this shot. He is so presistant and troublesome. I have a "Cletus Burts Bees" tube just for him (he has to have his own tube, I don't want him infecting my good tubes). I have tried everything under the sun. Everything I could think of to get rid of Cletus. There is nothing on the market to get rid of Cletus (maybe a prescription...but that's not for me). I have found one thing to help him go away faster. Abriva. Abriva is my new BFF. I have 3 Abriva's scattered. 1 tube in my bathroom, 1 at mom and dads and a pump Abriva in my purse. It is amazing....clears Cletus up in a couple of days (except for the time I got one Cletus and then another one right on top of the old Cletus...it was ugly).

As I said earlier, Cletus has shown up in all of the big moments so far. My sister's wedding, my recent trip to Mexico, numerous beach trips, cookie making day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, New Years...you name it, Cletus has the t-shirt.

Mexico...really Cletus....Mexico!
I never thought I would be hooked. HOLY MOLY I was wrong! This website is like crack. So, I signed up for it and just tinkered around. Then I saw how easy it was to make the boards and pin the images. There are some crafty, talented people out there. I made a couple of boards, you know, crafty, yummy, nail polish (obsessed with sparkles now), Christmas stuff, things for the home (whenever I get a house and get to craft it up) and so on and so on. I'm going to share some of the top crafty stuff that I want to make soon....if you aren't on pinterest, don't do it...it will suck you in :)
Sorry guys...I guess I have been on a high since Mexico! So on that note, Mexico was awesome! We had the best time there. We did something every day...no down time (and even watched the World Series while we were there). The weather was beautiful the whole time and I was so sad to leave, but I was happy to come home to see my family. Part of E's family was there, so it was nice to spend a lot of time with them. E's mom speaks Spanish very well, so we were able to go into downtown Cancun and feel somewhat comfortable walking around. We went into a grocery store and stocked up on food, they have one of the most amazing bakeries, it was so good. The water was this beautiful blue color. I took so many pictures, I just didn't want to forget it. We went to Isla Mujeres and stayed all day (got to see a turtle farm...highlight of the trip), rode in golf carts around the island, tried conch (it wasn't too bad), watched beautiful sunrises and sunsets, checked out the resorts, shopped for gifts, went to Tullum, ate amazing food, and even tried snorkeling (which that didn't work too well).
More about Cletus later :) Enjoy the pictures!!

It was my first grown up job...kinda. Since I was 16 I have worked with the same corporation. It was the ideal job! Working with kids all day, planning activities, going on field trips, making lots of friends...it was perfect. And I mean perfect. I would have probably stayed with that corporation for life, but that wasn't in the cards. I was finishing up my last summer with the non-profit and I had to make a choice, apply for a state job that would pay me more and continue to give me benefits or stick with the non-profit, in hopes they would hire me full full time. Well, I applied, had an interview and wouldn't you know it...I got the job with the state.

So today in celebration of my 4 year anniversary, i treated myself to a Asiago Parmesan Bagel with Jalapeno Cream Cheese with a hot chocolate....go me!!Anniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05827674630819437434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1326287715575321301.post-43980743551107991672011-10-03T20:17:00.001-04:002011-10-03T21:08:31.029-04:00Day 2, 3 and 4<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">It has been some crazy days recently, so I haven't been able to post everyday.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I changed this to what I ate today...because I had the best lunch. I went to The Pit with my co workers and it was amazing! I hate that I didn't get to eat there when Ed Mitchell was there, but oh my goodness...it was so good!!! I ordered an appetizer to share...Mini PBLT (pimento cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato on homemade biscuits) and my entree was Chopped NC BBQ with mac and cheese, sweet potato fries and it comes it a biscuit and hush puppies. The best BBQ I have ever had in my whole life!
